The Tony Barbee era was ushered in Wednesday night with a disappointing crowd in the new Auburn Arena. However, despite a depleted roster, these young, inexperienced Tigers mirrored their coach in a defense first mentality that propelled them to a 79-66 win over West Alabama.
The Tigers used pressure defense and a double-double from junior Kenny Gabriel, who finished with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Josh Wallace, who we have always loved here at The Big Blue Bagel Blog Spot, continued to show his ability to lead, as he started at point guard and played superb on-ball defense that often helped generate spurts by the Tigers. Wallace logged 25 minutes and committed only two turnovers, a far better statistic than we saw at this position last season.
Auburn returns to exhibition play next Monday, November 8 at the Auburn Arena, before the season opener versus UNC-Asheville, Friday, November 12 at 8 PM CST. The opener will be a double-header with the Lady Tigers, who host Mercer; tip-off for the ladies' contest is 5 PM CST.
